Session 9: Democratic Actors and Regime Consolidation (March 7, Monday)

(1) Based on the reading you have done on Brazil thus far identify two overarching problems the country faces. Assess to what extent the following three actors can address these problems: (a) the Workers' Party, (b) the Church, and (c) social movements.

(2) If you were designing a policy to address a major problem in Brazil, based on the experience of the democratic actors you studied for this session, what would that policy be and how would it work? Be sure to identify three distinct policies.

Session 10: Economic and Social Change in the New Brazilian Democracy (March 9, Wednesday)

(1) Compare Brazil's governability problems (read: state capacity) with other Latin American countries that you have studied. How can these problems of order be resolved in ways that enhance the consolidation of democracy?
