INDIRECT RULE & ITS EFFECTS
BIFURCATED SOCIETIES:
- (1) The Merchant Capital Sector: colonial states controlled cultivators of export crops who were heavily taxed and had to sell their products to monopsonies (colonial agencies with monopolies over the buyer's side of the market).
- (2) The Household Production Sector: farmers and others not connected to the export enclave.
THE EFFECTS OF INDIRECT RULE:
- Promoted the growth of patron-client ties.
- Kept "the nation" divided by ethnic identities.
- Encouraged separation between the state and the economy.
- Post-colonial states were weak. They ruled over divided societies and they had little or no despotic or infrastructural power.
