The Effect of Elevated CO2 on Tobacco Hornworm Herbivory

Protocol: Measuring Leaf Area

If you have a leaf area meter, this is the simplest way to make the measurement. Follow the instructions which come with the instrument.

If you do not have a leaf area meter, you can photocopy the leaves, keeping them as flat as possible. After photocopying, cut the leaf shapes out of the paper carefully and precisely. Weigh the paper leaves to get an idea of relative leaf area. If you would like to convert back to an area measurement, such as square centimeters, from your weight measurement, weigh a known area of paper (such as one square centimeter), and use that value to make your conversions.
