How faculty workloads might be streamlined and more reasonably distributed will be examined in this project. It
will involve an analysis not only of Carleton and Macalester but also of the five other colleges supported by
Mellon, to determine how faculty currently spend their time (in teaching, service, and scholarship), and to
evaluate what structural changes might be made to reduce unnecessary pressures of time and stress on them. A
management consultant will be hired to work with departments, programs, individuals, and the administrations of the
two colleges in trying to understand our problems and in working to ameliorate them.
